Promthep Cape, Phuket

Sunset at the southern tip of the island — when to arrive, what to see and how to get there from Nai Harn.

Updated October 2026From hotel About 10 min
Short answer

Promthep Cape (Laem Phromthep) is the headland at the southern tip of Phuket and the island's most famous sunset viewpoint. Entry is free, sunset is usually between about 6:15 and 6:45 pm, and it gets busy — arrive 45–60 minutes early in high season. It is about 10 minutes' drive from Nai Harn.

About Promthep Cape

Promthep Cape — Laem Phromthep in Thai — is the rocky headland where Phuket ends and the Andaman Sea begins. From the top you look across the water to small islands offshore, along the coast towards Nai Harn and down to the waves breaking on the rocks below.

It is one of the most visited places in Phuket, especially in the hour before sunset, when visitors and local families gather to watch the sun go down over the sea.

Sunset tips

  • Arrive early. In high season (November to April) parking and the best spots fill up — aim for 45–60 minutes before sunset.
  • Try the quieter angles. The path down the headland and the Windmill Viewpoint nearby are calmer alternatives.
  • Stay after the sun sets. The sky often glows for 15–20 minutes afterwards, and the crowd thins out.
  • Check the weather. In the monsoon months, clouds can hide the sun — or produce the most dramatic skies of the year.

Watch the sunset at Promthep, then be back at your private pool villa in about 10 minutes.

What to see

  • The shrine on the cape, surrounded by elephant figures left as offerings — please be respectful and dress modestly.
  • The lighthouse near the viewpoint, a well-known landmark of the cape.
  • The walking path down the headland towards the tip, with wide sea views.
  • Restaurants and stalls near the top for a drink or snack after sunset.

How to get to Promthep Cape

Promthep Cape is at the end of the coastal road south of Nai Harn and Rawai. From Green Garden Villas it is about 10 minutes by car or scooter. From Patong expect around 50–60 minutes, and from Phuket Town around 40–45 minutes, depending on traffic. Taxis and ride-hailing apps work well, but book your return in advance — demand peaks right after sunset.
